STAR Marine Oil Analysis

Marine Oil Analysis

Download the Marine Lubricants & Services Pdf

The early detection of lubricant degradation, destructive contaminants and potential equipment failure will avoid costly fleet downtime. Considerable cost savings can be made through the prevention of lost production and reduced maintenance costs.

We are independent of all oil companies and have unique service-based audit processes and reporting programmes to optimise your oil life, improve the overall performance of your machine life and implement action plans.

Routine Machinery Testing

Engine Oils
Main Engine System Oil
Main Engine Cam-Shaft
Main Engine Cylinder Oil
Generator (auxiliary) Engines
Emergency Generators

These systems are normally covered by a standard engine oil analysis test-suite:
Visc 40 & 100°C – ICP – Soot % - Flash Point – Water % - Base Number

Additional testing can be carried out as required, usually including…

Asphaltenes Analysis

We measure asphaltenes using an in-house method developed over a number of years. It is important to measure these for systems using heavy fuel oils, as asphaltenes are solids that can precipitate out of the oil, plus they are abrasive and can cause wear and can block filters.

Hydraulic Oils

Steering gear systems
Winch Hydraulics
Control Pitch Propellers
Remote Control Valves
Bow Thrusters
Stern Thrusters
Deck Cranes
Ramp Hydraulics
Hatch Covers

These systems are normally covered by a standard hydraulic oil analysis test-suite:
Visc 40 deg C – ICP – ISO - Appearance - Oxidation - Acid number - Water %

Gear Oils

Main Engine reduction gear
Stern Tube
Transmissions
Bearings
Turbocharger
Gear Winch

These systems are normally covered by a standard gear oil analysis test-suite:
Visc 40 °C – ICP – PQ - Appearance – Water %

Additional testing can be carried out as required, usually including…

Oxidation Analysis

There is a requirement by some classification societies to include the analysis of the stern tube oil’s oxidation. This is performed as an extra test as and when required, and is analysed by FTIR.

Thermal Oils

Primary and secondary boilers:
Visc 40 °C – ICP – Carbon Residue - Appearance – Water % - Acid Number – Flash Point
